The Gay Games were founded in 1982 by Dr. Tom Waddell, an Olympic decathlete and native of Paterson, NJ. San Francisco, California, played host to the first two Gay Games (1982 & 1986), New York City hosted the 1994 games, and games have been hosted in both European, Canadian and American Cities. Hong Kong will play host to the 2022 Games, being the first Asian city to host the games.

Each of the games have included a theme, and the theme of the Hong Kong Gay Games 2022, is Unity in Diversity, emphasizing one of tenets of the “core mission of the Gay Games to promote equality of human beings through the organization of and participation in an international sporting and cultural event.” The spirit of equality in enshrined in the Games’ principle of inclusion and individual differences.
